PT Links fresh from the showroom

PT's, unlike almost all other cars, seem to beg to be customized.  Before I bought mine, I spent weeks on the internet looking at what others have done to theirs.  There are so many possibilities and options and directions to go, it is difficult to decide.  Should it be a Hot Rod look, woody theme, cruiser, old time sedan or perhaps a panel truck.  Flames, fins, chrome, wheels, bumpers, grilles, visors, skirts, they all look cool.  I haven't decided for sure on a particular theme for mine yet, I like the stock look with just a few additions.

One of the nice things I like about the GT is the modified interior.  Before, they had a cloth front to the leather seats.  Now they are one solid color and all leather.  The heated seats are also very nice.  The color of the GT interior is darker than all the other models.  It is now a dark Taupe for everything.  This looks a bit more plush than the lighter colors on other models.  Also, the colored air bag compartment and instrument panel are not colored like the original color of the car.  They are the carbon fiber look and very nice.

Being one of the first on the block to have a GT, I find that many of my options are limited.  Many of the items you'll find to provide that custom look don't work for the GT, so I am being very cautious for a while until technology catches up and manufactures modify their products to fit the GT.  Info below is an itemization of things I have done to customize my GT.

Interior

Glove Compartment-This is an easy item.  You will notice the glove compartment is a deep cavernous, but small, compartment.  Knowing how I tend to load things in my glove compartment, I figured a little divider will help organize things a bit.  Best price on these is $25 at CruiserBits

Seat Belt Covers-I did this just to try and do something and wish I had not.  They look OK in the photos but in reality, they feel a bit scratchy.  They also make it more difficult to put on your seat belt and prevent it from retracting all the way.  I see no advantage to these.  I put them on the back seats since I hardly ever use them.  The best price on these is $20 at CruiserBits.

Mirror Decorations-If you are a typical PT owner, you are between 40-60 years old.  You probably grew up with hot rods and cruisers.  You can find a variety of items to spruce up your dash that are nostalgic of those hot rod years.  For me, I chose the shrunken head, you remember them.  I use it as a symbol to let people know what could happen to them if they mess with my car.  It is a quick and easy item at only $7 from ShrunkenHeads.com.  You can find lots of other cruiser items from them including Rat Fink Stuff, Hula Dolls, Dice, Pistons and a lot more.

Door Pulls-This is an easy item to accent the interior of your car.  This is also an item that will be offered with the forthcoming Chrome Package from Chrysler.  There are half a dozen or so designs available.  Most will cost between $35-$45.  I recently found a place that has them on sale for half price, $20.  Best price on these is at: PT-Tuning

Chrome Sill Plates-This is another item to be offered in the upcoming chrome package.  There are a handful of designs available out there.  They seem to come in either aluminum or stainless steel.  You can get them with just lines, Cruiser logo, PT Cruiser logo and with flames.  Though I like the flames, I chose the PT Cruiser logo as this is what they will look like with the factory chrome package.  Prices are about $90 for aluminum ones and the lowest I found for stainless steel is $100 at CruiserBits.
I'll put these on after the World Series.

Chrome Cigarette Lighter-I ordered this just to get another dash of chrome in my interior, fills up the little black hole.  Only place I have found these is at CruiserBits for about $25. I ordered these but they are on back order.

Wood grain Dash-I'm researching this to make sure the packages offered fit the new interior of the GT.  I have the new autostick transmission which I believe is slightly different than what is currently offered.  Lots of wood grain packages out there, anywhere from about $225 to $450, some plastic, some real wood.

Chrome Accents-I'm researching this to make sure the packages offered fit the new interior of the GT.  The new chrome package will have a chrome shift knob but it comes stock with the GT.  There are a variety of chrome accents available for most all the dials, speakers, AC, and control panels.  You can buy pieces individually or a complete kit costs $450 everywhere I have seen them.

Exterior

Valve Stems-This one is so easy, even I can do it.  For a small price you can add a very subtle accent to your vehicle.  I did this after the first week.  The best price on the internet for these is at CruiserBits, $15.

Smiley Grill-There are lots of very cool looking grills out there.  For me, I like the Stull Billet Grill.  Unfortunately, it doesn't fit the GT yet.  The upper portion does but the lower part of the GT grill is slightly larger that previous years and the Stull and all the others won't fit yet.  To placate myself until they do fit, I got one of the PT Woody kits because it is currently the only one that fits the GT.  It also looks very clean and is the same design as the chrome package look that will be available later this year for the PT.  PT's like to smile at you as they are coming down the road and this makes a nice sparkly smile and looks very attractive.  These are priced anywhere from $90-$129.  I got mine directly from PT Woody at the higher price because they were the only ones that specifically had the GT version listed.  Lowest price on these is $90 at Wyckoff-Mopar who now lists them for the GT 2003 model. You can probably do the work yourself but I had a friend at our local body shop do it, took him about an hour.  He said it is basically chrome tape you can buy for about $18 a roll.  I'll put up a better photo next round.

Custom License Plates-This was an easy one for me.  My nickname in baseball is Rocket or Rocket Man, hence, PT Rocket.  Unforturnatly I could only have 7 letter so we have PTROKET, close enough.  $41 from California DMV.

Chrome Belt Line-The soon to come chrome package will have a chrome belt line.  It looks much like the one PT Woody offers.  If it is like their grill kit, it is basically chrome tape which goes for $125.  I am more partial to the Stull belt line that is real metal chrome and complements the Chrysler Logo on the front hood.  I am thinking very hard about adding this very soon but I would like to see some of them in person first.  Best price for these is at PT Cruiser Mart for $310.

Chrome Spears-These are the little spears at the bottom of the doors.  I saw these on several cars at a PT Jamboree recently and the do add a nice touch.  The are also part of the future chrome package.  I have them but have not installed them yet.  The best price I saw on these was from PT-Tuning at $149.  I'll put them on after the World Series.

Performance
Performance is important to me as I have to drive lots of 2 lane, windy, hilly roads.  I need the power and especially the handling to get around all those slow poke tourists and those windy hills.  The GT has about 45% more power than the other models which seems to do the job pretty well.  I understand they have improved the handling over previous models but it seems to be it could still use some improvement.  It seems to set a little high so I will be looking into lowering the center of gravity a bit.  Also, it tends to tip a bit as you go around sharp turns quickly.  I am also looking into the stabilizer bars in the engine compartment and in the chassy.  My research has told me these will improved the handling considerably but I need to verify if these modifications are applicable to the GT.

Power wise, it seems like there are a few easy things you can do to increase the HP a bit.  Different air intakes, exhausts, manifolds will do this.  Most of what I see on the market are addressing non-GT models so until I get more info, I'll wait on these items.  I also don't want to be doing anything that will void the warranty.  I have already seen kits available to boost the HP from 215 to 250 and another to 300 HP.  Apparently they are working with Chrysler to do things so that it does not void your warranty.  They are still working on it so you'll have to be patient.

Sound System
The sound system for the PT or GT seems like it could be better.  Mostly with the speakers.  I haven't researched this too much but anything is available.  I think my modifications will be to possibly install better speakers and maybe more power.
